Jozi and Anaesthetics
About 2 weekends ago now I went to visit Sack and Mack in Jozi. I was terribly unhappy to miss all the harrowing sole-destroying suffering at Khayalitsha Day hospital, but I managed to get over it. I left early in the morning on Wednesday, flying with the sunrise and landing and OR Thambo airport at 9h30. I got collected by Boner and went to the bayit.
I put my stuff down in my one friend’s room, got a to-do list and then went out with some friends to Shwarma co, got a shwarma in a laffa, which was the highlight of my past year, then off to one of my matric friend’s houses to chill. I smoked about 4 nags and had a very very good time talking shit with those guys. They really are excellent.
I got a lift back to the bayit quite late in the evening, then immediately left again with this girl I tried to pick up at camp 2 years ago to collect one of her friends that I tried to pick up last year and go to this guy’s house for Nag. After chilling there for a while and having a great time I went through to another guy’s house party, which was awesome because I saw lots of people. I was there a bit longer than I would generally have chosen, but it was decent. Four of us were sitting in a sitting room. There was an awkward silence which the closet homosexual among us decided to break with “So Guy, how about that cock?”
The next morning the bayit residents went to Limud all day. I backed up and repaired computers. We ordered Pizza. In the afternoon I organised an awesome Sollelim 2003 hanalah reunion at the bayit. It was amazing to see everybody. They burned stuff and made great comments. Some of the others were interesting, strange, racist, and kugelly
In the evening the bayit people brought Chinese back for us, then we got dressed up and went to the Hat. A drunken lady stood on my leg with her high heels. There was Jews everywhere. They played bloody good music and I had a smashing time dancing. I danced quite a bit with 2 Joburg girls I know from Habo. One of them picked up later. A drunk SA rugby player tried to pick up The other one up and we got great footage. My buddy got wasted and danced like a doos, then we convinced him to go dance up on the stage, which I also filmed. A lesbian tried to pick up one of the girls from earlier, which was amazing. While I was filming the rugby player this random chick in green came to pull “sexy” posses at the camera. She then took my glasses, which left my completely bewildered and dumbfundered until I eventually managed to get them back. My DJ friend was amazing, he plays my buddy like a puppet when he’s drunk. I drove the 3 of us home.
The next day I slept late. We went out for supper with some of the matrics, which was awesome. I had a nap in the afternoon and then we went to a dear friend of mine’s house for Shabbat. The food and company were both great. Afterwards I went back to the bayit where we smoked nag and chilled with people till quite late.
The following day we played Yaniv all day. It was awesome. Later one some people came over and I hung out with them. Then the guy whose room I stayed in initially got ill so the 3 remaining friends from Shnat went to the General for supper. It was amazing, due to unintentional miscommunication we had booked a 20h30 movie and he had expected us to stay all night, so there was this great undercurrent of tension. I spoke to his father about lightening protection for a long time. The food got burned because of us pressuring to leave. We ate speedily and then went to see the Simpsons movie. We were very irritated by the whole thing, but the irritation faded with the movie. We then, after trying hard to get out of it, wound up going back to General. We had a really cool time once we were back.
On my last day I went out for breakfast with a friend from camp, then went to the airport and went home.
At the moment I am doing anaesthetics. It is a novel profession, and the novelty wore off quite quickly. I’ve seen quite a few interesting operations, but operations are generally boring. I’ve intubated people, taken case notes and popped in a few LMAs. I’m getting better at putting up drips. On Tuesdays I bunk a lecture on therapeutics, but I go in later for an x-ray tutorial and to hang out in the ER. On Friday I bunk anaesthetics lectures.
Last week end a dear friend of mine came down for Australia. I collected him from a hotel and then went to get nandos and smoke nags on camps bay beach. It was really great to catch up with him. I’ve seen him a few more times since then.
There are an amazing group of girls in aftercare at the moment.
Last night I went to a 21st of a special friend of mine. It was a very alternative 21st, in her typical style. Lots of candles and incense and a tent in her house and a fire and drumming circle. Drumming was fun. I rubbed a beautiful girl’s feet for a while, she’s cool.
My medication is not working too well, so I had to up the dose by a tablet in order to sleep at night.
Today I saw 1 of 3. We had a brief smoothie, it was very tame. I had an afternoon nap. Tomorrow I am doing orthopaedics in theatre and finish at 12h30! Come on!
